Wow, this piece really says 'Japan' in its broad expanses of space. Which might sound weird considering it is one of the most densely populated places on the planet. But if you think about the traditional Japanese artform that uses the concept of 余白 (yohaku) then you'll see what I mean. Look at 松林図屏風 (Shōrin-zu byōbu) by Hasegawa Tohaku, or 燕子花図 (Enji-hanazu) by Ogata Kōrin. Or even look at the stunning rock garden at Ryoanji Temple in Kyoto. The first time I went there I was turned on my head - walking out of noisy shoulder to shoulder people, both tourists and locals, into this silent space that featured a rock garden, most of which was featureless; and not one bit wasted space at all!

Great work once again at capturing a feeling, a mood, and in this case, a space.
